What Wellness Experts Take When They're Unwell

A medicine cabinet is often forgotten about...until there's an SOS situation and you find yourself running to it. It's important to make sure that your medicine cabinet is well stocked with the essentials, but what do wellness experts also have to hand? We asked three wellness warriors - a nutritionist, a doctor and the founder of Planet Organic - what are the must-have medicines we should keep in our cabinets to keep us well, and what can help to get us better when there's an emergency.

Emma Davies, Leapfrog Nutritionist

For Antiobiotic-induced Diarrhoea

Saccharomyces Boulardii: This helps restore gut flora balance when taking antibiotics, it can reduce the risk of diarrhoea from contaminated food or water and help fight bacterial infections like Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) and viral diarrhoea. (Note: Since S. boulardii is a yeast, it's generally safe alongside antibiotics which kill bacteria but not yeast. However, people with weakened immune systems or those with central venous catheters should consult a doctor before using it).

For Anxiety, Stress and Grief

L Theanine: An amino acid found in green tea, is known for its calming effects on the brain without causing drowsiness. It works by increasing levels of neurotransmitters like GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, which help regulate mood and reduce stress. Additionally, L-theanine promotes alpha brain wave activity, associated with a relaxed but alert mental state, similar to meditation. It also lowers cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, helping to counteract anxiety. Unlike prescription anti-anxiety medications, L-theanine does not cause dependence or sedation, making it a natural and gentle option for reducing anxiety while maintaining focus and clarity.

For Pain & Inflammation

Turmeric /Curcumin: Curcumin inhibits key inflammatory pathways, such as NF-κB, which play a role in chronic conditions like arthritis, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders. It also has antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress and support overall health. While turmeric alone has low bioavailability, combining it with black pepper (piperine) or fat enhances absorption, making it more effective for reducing inflammation and pain naturally.

For Emergency Wounds or Infections

Iodine: Iodine tincture or povidone-iodine can be used as a powerful antiseptic to clean wounds and prevent infections. Additionally, iodine can be used to purify water in survival situations by killing bacteria and viruses.  I use a few drops in water and gargle whenever I feel a sore throat coming on. Keeping iodine on hand ensures you're ready for various medical and survival needs, making it a versatile and valuable addition to any medicine cabinet (or first aid kit)

For Absorbing Toxins & Chemicals

Activated Charcoal: a powerful emergency remedy, it is commonly used to treat food poisoning, drug overdoses, and accidental poisoning by binding to harmful substances and preventing their absorption in the digestive tract. Some people also use it for hangovers, though evidence is limited. In cases of gas, bloating, or mild stomach discomfort, activated charcoal can help reduce symptoms. However, it should be used with caution, as it can interfere with medications and nutrient absorption. Keeping it in your first aid kit can be useful for a range of digestive and toxic emergencies.

For Calm

Magnesium glycinate:

Magnesium glycinate is a supplement made from a combination of the mineral magnesium and an amino acid known as glycine. It's believed to block stimulating neurotransmitters to reduce anxiety.

For Sports Performance & Cognition

Creatine Monohydrate: improves recovery after sports, but also augments performance and builds muscle mass. New research suggests it's also good for cognition too and can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

For Sleep

Leapfrog SNOOZE: reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, and increases the flow of the calming neurotransmitter GABA to aid a better night's sleep - all thanks to a unique chewable formulation of calming Lactium, Lactoferrin and Vitamin B6.

For All-Round Health

Omega 3: Whether it’s for heart health, brain function, or reducing inflammation, omega-3s support multiple aspects of your health. If you don’t eat enough fatty fish (like salmon or sardines), taking an omega-3 supplement ensures you’re covered.
