Leapfrog IMMUNE is a supplement containing lactoferrin, zinc and vitamin C. Think of it as your own body’s elite squad that you call in when you need extra immune support against viruses and bacteria. Every dose of Leapfrog IMMUNE contains 250mg of lactoferrin and the recommended daily intake of zinc and vitamin C (within two tablets). Lactoferrin is found in the milk of most mammals as one of the vital ingredients that primes a baby’s immune system (lacto means milk, and ferrin means iron). An iron-binding protein, lactoferrin exists in all your bodily secretions to combat environmental toxins when they enter the body. The largest storage of lactoferrin is in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. They burst open and release lactoferrin to prevent the spread of infection. Lactoferrin helps maintain immune homeostasis or balance. It helps to regulate our body, so we have normal, healthy ranges for things like temperature, energy intake and growth. Lactoferrin also supports digestive and gut health, promoting prebiotic activity.

Separating lactoferrin from milk is a complicated endeavour and we chose the Proferrin® brand of lactoferrin as it offers the highest purity on the market (>95%). The lactoferrin is extracted from premium fresh milk – not colostrum or the by-product whey – and the milk is produced in a dynamic dairy production area in Northern France. In order to exercise its immune bioactivity, bovine lactoferrin needs to be native. A process involving low temperature and gentle chromatography and filtration preserves the native structure of Proferrin®, so it’s just as you would find in fresh milk.

Lactium® is a natural milk protein hydrolysate that was created by French scientists to emulate the calm mood of a baby after feeding. The enzymes present in a baby’s digestive system help to release a bioactive peptide that induces a state of bliss. As our digestive system matures our digestive enzymatic system is no longer able to release the peptide and we lose the benefit.
French researchers developed an innovative process to reproduce a baby’s digestive mechanism. They used a well-known digestive enzyme – trypsin – to isolate the milk protein hydrolysate containing the bioactive peptide – alpha-casozepine – from casein. It has a gentle action on the body but has been clinically proven to reduce stress-related symptoms and encourage better sleep.

Alpha-casozepine is a bioactive decapeptide – originating from S1 casein, a cow’s milk protein – that has an affinity for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the brain. Scientific evidence suggests it has an anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effect similar to benzodiazepines, but without the side effects.

By having an affinity for certain receptors in the central nervous system called GABAA receptors, Lactium® increases the activity of Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter, or chemical messenger, that is well known for its inhibitory action on anxiety and its relaxing properties.

Cortisol is a stress hormone produced in the adrenal glands that helps engage your “fight or flight” response and contributes to maintain your energy balance during all day. It also acts as a vital part of your circadian rhythm, reaching a peak in the morning and reducing to minimum at around midnight. The peak in the morning gives us energy, and the reduction by the evening leads to tiredness.
If there is an acute stress, the body will return to baseline. But if the stress is too frequent or chronic, then the body cannot recover and regenerate resources, leading to health problems such as weight increase, sleep disorders, and immune system dysregulation.
Lactium® has been shown to have an effect on cortisol relase; blood cortisol levels reduce significantly after an acute stress event when supplementing with Lactium®. Even with chronic anxiety, Lactium® reduces blood cortisol level in the morning.

Lactoferrin is safe for children to take (and is, of course, a key component of mother’s milk), so we suggest our chewable tablets are suitable from age 4. Our formula contains the recommended daily amount of zinc and vitamin C for children (aged 4-11) in 1 tablet, and for adults in 2 tablets.

One of the reasons Lactoferrin is so successful as an anti-viral and anti-bacterial is that it binds iron to itself, iron that viruses and bacteria need to survive and thrive. Lactoferrin can help to starve the viruses/bacteria of their food source, giving the body a chance to mobilise itself against infection. The only issue might be if you have hemochromatosis as Lactoferrin raises serum iron and ferritin (but it’s a natural way to up iron levels during anaemia, without side effects). If you have any health issues in this area, do consult with your health practitioner first before taking this product.

There are no contraindications in taking Lactoferrin every day over a long period, although there is as yet no data for supplementing with it one’s whole life.
Of course, it is important to speak to your doctor before beginning any supplement. However, if intending on a long term supplementation with Lactoferrin it would be an idea to take some breaks, for example during the summer period with less infection, so you rely on a ”natural immune system” without a perpetual booster. This was the thinking behind Leapfrog’s “Pulse Method”.

Lactium® is an ingredient of natural origin as it is sourced from milk, and is harmless. Unlike benzodiazepines, which belong to the anxiolytics family, Lactium®does not create any addiction, even at a high dosage.

The decapeptide with the soothing properties found in Lactium® – namely alpha-casozepine – is not present by itself in milk and is encrypted in AS1- casein. It’s released in neonates but not in adults. The enzymatic system in adults is more complex and can’t allow the quantitative delivery of this specific sequence from the protein.

Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have been run, details of which can be found on our dedicated Lactium® webpage. Clinical studies were made according to Good Clinical Practice Guidelines with official ethical committees. In the human trials, tests were used that have been validated by the scientific community (i.e. Stroop test, Cold pressor test, Spielberger questionnaires,…). They were not developed specifically for these studies. Blood pressure reactivity to stress (systolic and diastolic blood pressure) was also tested, as well as ACTH and cortisol which are stress-related hormones. The recommendation is for 150mg per day, equivalent to one Leapfrog SNOOZE tablet (for age 7 and above). This dosage can be increased for special situations that induce additional stress (like an exam, presentation or important meeting.

During the various clinical studies in humans, Lactium® was taken either in the morning or in the evening. In both cases, the efficacy of Lactium® to reduce stress was observed. In order to alleviate stress prior to sleep, Lactium® can be taken one hour before bedtime. In animal studies, Though Lactium® has been shown to be physiologically effective about 1 hour after intake, a regular sensation of well-being can take effect between one week to 15 days. Lactium® helps to regulate stress and stress symptoms, but the perceived effect may be different from one situation to another, depending on the level of stress and the individual.

In animal studies, Lactium®’s effect begins to decrease about 6 hours after intake. In humans, the sensation of well-being has been shown to last after stopping the supplement treatment. Lactium is quickly metabolized without accumulating effect. There is no remanence effect with Lactium when we stop the supplementation.

Studies have been conducted on Lactium® to determine the bioactive peptide structure (such as NMR, molecular dynamics simulation, circular dichroism). The peptide adopts an alpha-helix structure with both lipophilic and hydrophilic faces. Because of its amphipathic structure, the bioactive peptide is likely to pass through the intestinal barrier. The mechanism of action of Lactium® is complex, but the effect induced by Lactium® on stress requires the message to come to the brain. In vitro studies show that the bioactive peptide contained in Lactium® has an affinity for non-peripheral-type GABAA receptors, receptors that are commonly involved in anxiolysis. Sequence homology with DBI (diazepam binding inhibitor), an endogenous ligand of the GABAA receptor, and structural homology with benzodiazepines has been demonstrated.

In our studies, we see an effect of Lactium after 15 days of supplementation. We have no data after one day of supplementation (for 150mg and 300 mg), but for 600mg of supplementation of Lactium, there’s an effect after 2 days.

Leapfrog IMMUNE contains Proferrin® – a high-quality, native and pure lactoferrin produced in France from premium fresh cow’s milk. It strengthens the immune system and digestive health and has a positive effect on innate and adaptive immune responses through the stimulation of immune cells.
Leapfrog IMMUNE contains zinc, an essential nutrient that performs many vital roles in the body. One of the critical benefits of this mineral is its support of the development and function of immune cells, which is why you’ll find zinc in natural cold treatments. We’ve chosen zinc citrate, which is well absorbed by the body.
Leapfrog IMMUNE also contains vitamin C – a strong antioxidant which is widely thought to strengthen your body’s natural defences. Antioxidants protect cells from harmful molecules (free radicals) and thereby support the immune system. It also helps encourage the production of certain white blood cells that protect against infection. Our vitamin C is a blend of ascorbic acid and calcium ascorbate which are effective forms for the body.

Isomalt – a sugar-free sweetener that doesn’t increase blood glucose or insulin levels and is safe for teeth. It has been shown to promote good bacteria in the gut, and it acts as a texturizing agent for the tablets.
Citric Acid – this boosts the acidity, enhances the flavour, and stabilises and preserves the active ingredients in our chewable tablets.
Natural Flavourings – we’ve chosen lemon and orange flavours to give our chewable tablets a pleasant tang.
Magnesium stearate – this is a flow agent which allows the chewable tablet to hold its shape. Magnesium is an essential mineral and stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid found in many foods such as eggs, coconut oil, chicken, walnuts and salmon. Both are entirely safe, and magnesium stearate is simply a salt that combines them both.

Leapfrog SNOOZE contains Lactium® – a patented milk protein hydrolysate produced in France from premium fresh cow’s milk. It contains a peptide that has an affinity for the GABAA receptor and can reduce cortisol levels. As such it has calming properties and can promote restful sleep.
Leapfrog SNOOZE contains Proferrin® – a high-quality, native and pure lactoferrin produced in France from premium fresh cow’s milk. It strengthens the immune system and digestive health and has a positive effect on innate and adaptive immune responses through the stimulation of immune cells.
Leapfrog SNOOZE contains vitamin B6, an essential, water soluble vitamin that supports mood regulation and shows key benefits to the brain and nervous system. B6 aids in the production of melatonin, the precursor to sleep and has a key role in supporting sleep/wake cycles. We’ve chosen Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P5P) which is the bioactive, more absorbable form of B6 and so doesn’t need to be converted within the body.

The majority of the carbon impact of milk comes from other components, such as cream and lactose. Because it is such a small fraction of the milk, the calculation of the carbon impact of our lactoferrin production is 0.94 kg of CO2 / kg of lactoferrin. In other terms, one kilogram of lactoferrin is the equivalent of 1kWh of electricity – and that makes 4000 Leapfrog IMMUNE chewable tablets.
